Starting this blog has been a splinter in my mind for many months now. It’s like an itch that needed a good scratchin’. So I’ve decided to just start. I’m worried about keeping up with it but I’m sure it will become a bit of a habit once I get a few days and weeks under my belt.
One of the things that has stifled my attempts to begin has been choosing what the first post was gonna be. I mean, seriously, the first post has to be special, right? You only have one first time. Or, is it more likely to be just a starting point, nothing special? Well, we’ll see.
So, here goes…
I’ve been thinking a lot about titles and labels lately and I think I’ve landed on one that I’m good with. I am a human. That’s it. Seems to me that God had something unique and wonderful in mind when He made us. Anthropos…mankind….humans. It’s His original intent. It’s us without all of the nomenclaturial baggage that we’ve been dragging around for 10,000 years. And what’s worse is we’ve been attempting some kind of leap from human to god from the beginning. I’ve never been asked by the Father to be a god or attempt to be God. I am a human and He said it is very, very good. My brother Joe said it best: “Human beings are wonderful creatures and it is quite a process trying to become one.” So, here’s to the journey of becoming what I was created to be. A human.
I am a human. I’m not black or white or yellow or red. I am not a Christian or a Buddhist or religious; not democrat or republican. I am full of thought and emotion and feelings and intentions. My good days are good and my bad days are dreadful. I try, I fail, I move and sail on and on as this formation of earth and water crafted by the Hands and Breath of Abba. I cry and bleed, I smile and laugh from deep wells of joy and innocence. I lie and mask my identity in fits of self-protection which are only thwarted by love. When I love it is healing and freeing, it opens up the windows and breathes warm sun-soaked air into a musty dark facade that I continue to court. I am a human. What I am sick with was so dire that it took the very blood of the Son of God to be the antidote. I still limp from my past, embrace my present and rest in the hope of what’s going to be. I am a human. I refuse to try to be more, I ignore the voices calling me to be less. Lies. Those are lies. I am a human, beloved of the Father in eternity past, present and future. Thank you, Papa.
Who are you?

No, dave. Here goes something. That was awesome.
Hi, Dave, I just wanted to say welcome to blogging. I came to your blog via Jeromy’s blog. Great first post! I look forward to getting to know you and your voice in the coming months.
“I am a human. I refuse to try to be more, I ignore the voices calling me to be less.” I love growing in the fact that being human is a GOOD thing. By nature, to be human is not to be God, but it also not to be an evil wicked demon. It is to be human: made in the image of God and whom God declares very good with an incredible capacity to choose things that aren’t so “very good”. Well said.
“I lie and mask my identity in fits of self-protection which are only thwarted by love.” Dang-it! I hate it when that happens.
I am Batman.
Dave-
I got here via Jeromy’s, I mean, Batman’s invite (if you aren’t aware of it he calls you a “good friend” on his blog – that may or may not concern you).
Welcome to the black hole…oops, blogosphere
Awesome first post. What a liberating truth it is to come to grips with who we are. And it is not god. Thank you for sharing your heart and I look forward to reading more.
grace and peace,
Chad
Wow… Batman reads your blog?
Welcome to blogging… and nice to meet you!
“I ignore the voices calling me to be less. Lies. Those are lies. I am a human, beloved of the Father in eternity past, present and future. Thank you, Papa”
Ahhh… now that is a great statement.
I don’t really know who I am much of the time right now, but I’ll let you know if I ever figure it out.
HW-
After this record opening weekend Batman will no longer read blogs but pay others to do it for him.
Hey, Dave, I also found your blog from Jeromy’s blog and I’m glad I did! I love this post – The idea of accepting my humanity and really living into the unique human being that God has made me to be, limps and warts and all, has been something God keeps bringing up for me… thanks for sharing this beautiful post. Welcome to the blogosphere
That post knocked me on my Arsseee!!! Please, don’t keep such poetic treasures to yourself!!! Love ya’ bro and it is incredible watching Papa doing such an exceptional work in your humanness. ~ Jon
Sorry Jeromy. You are sleep deprived, not Batman. Now go and take a nap. Tell work your therapist has prescribed it, works every time. However, if you’re choosing to be Batman, I’m choosing my favorite super hero… I am “Llyod Christmas” ~ Jon
Jon ~ I am indeed sleep deprived (though not as much as my wife). Seriously, I am looking for the nap room here at work, but no go. As a therapist, do you have any recommendations of how to make a baby sleep at night and be awake during the day? The only thing I can think of is to trade babies with a Japaneese family seeing as they are in an opposite time zone.
Jeromy-
From page 332 in the same book that brought you babysitting by webcam and swimming kids to shore to tucker them out:
Jim Beam by night, No Doz by day. See doctor for dosages.
Was the Jim Bean for Dad or the baby? Perhaps I should contact AA for the safe dosages.
(See Dave, this is what happens — people quickly take over your blog and comment about whatever they want! I know from being the victom.)
Keep it up! It’s all good…
“Was the Jim Bean for Dad or the baby?”
Jeromy – We are a Christian home. We hold everything in common.
Jesse!!!! (or is it Mona? or Dave? I’m confused)
Chad – If you were a “Christian home” than you would not be drinking Jim Bean, let alone know that it is referring to a bourbon whiskey. Whatch’a thinkin’?
“(See Dave, this is what happens — people quickly take over your blog and comment about whatever they want! I know from being the victom.)”
A quote from the guy who actually began this tangential adventure with the following quote…
“I am Batman.”
Great observation Sir Jeromy
“If you were a “Christian home” than you would not be drinking Jim Bean”
*sigh* You sad, sad, Californians. Jim Beam is not only a heavenly bourbon but also the nickname of John, the disciple whom Jesus loved most. You don’t really think heaven will only have Newcastle, do you? (along with spill proof bottles)
Sir Jon, (by the way Dave, you’ll also get called names and people will insult you on your blog…you sure you want to do this?)
My quote, “I am Batman”, was not a tangent but was very much central to the point of Dave’s post. You see, Batman is a human hero living in the midst of extra-human super heroes. He could strive to be more, or he can cower to the lies persuading him to be less…but he doesn’t, he is a reluctant human-hero accepting his lot. At his core, Batman is the essence of what it means to simply be human and still participate in a mission greater than oneself: the restoration of all Gotham (i.e. creation). So when I said “I am Batman” I was saying poetically, “I am Human participating in something greater.” In a sense, we are all Batman and Batman is each of us. But it seems as if all the deeper meanings of my quote got lost.
I should have listened to Jesus when he taught, “don’t cast your pearls before swine.” Clearly, this was such a case.
(Dave, some people cannot be reasoned with…hehehe)
Chad ~ The Apostle John drank bourbon? Wha? And Jesus also loved bourbon? Wha? Perhaps I’m reading into your comment.
(Dave, this will happen often where people misconstrue your words and breath their own meaning into them).
But, I did hear you when you said that there will be MACs in heaven and that the beer doesn’t spill. Very nice.
Dearest friend of mine, Jeromy ~ If you’re going to travel down that road, then forget Lloyd Christmas, I am “Hancock”! A smashed up, rough around the edges, uncivil at times, scared of big crowds, easy to get fired up, grumpy when his leathers get bunched up, squint-eyed, kind of guy. Now that’s a superhero!
Sorry about taking up space here Dave, but Jeromy and I have to clear the air, or fog it up. Listen I went to seminary, so I’m the one qualified to make these types of judgements. Let me throw this down, In a UFC match, Hancock plants Batman within a minute! Man, I ‘m so full of __ _ _ _!
lol Jer. Naw, they didn’t have distilleries back then. I think they were waiting to be discovered in Kentucky
Chad ~ They didn’t need distilleries…they had Jesus! Think of the Bourbon HE made!
Jon ~ I concede. Not because I think Hancock would win in a fight (by the way, he would be of the “super” hero variety), but because you went to seminary. Who am I but a lowly ol’ commoner. I bow the knee, Sir Johnny.
So Dave, since we’re onto the subject of super heroes, which one would you be? (thought it would be nice to pay tribute to you as the “host”)

Super hero…hmmm….I would be Ultra Man. Dude fights for the good, all the while charged by the sun. He regularly has to fly up to the sun and recharge, fully aware of his source of power. However, I’ve always been a little disappointed in his choice of a full-body jump suit and the fact that he has to battle all alone. I prefer baggy shorts and brothers and sisters who stand along side of me.
Somehow this post has gotten away from me….
Dave, I promise not to participate, encourage or even ponder this level of digression ever, ever, never again, on your blog. I promise!!! I’ll just go get my digressive fix by heading back over to Jeromy’s blog, which I’ve been neglecting to do for quite some time, and creating a bit of tangential discussion there. Where has Herr Brink been in all of this??? One comment in the beginning and he ’s gone MIA!
Seriously, you’ve really started with a very thought provoking and encouraging post, that I’m sure sets the stage to bless all of us that will journey into the gray with you.
It was Bruce Wayne’s fault. But you can’t blame the guy, he’s only human (full circle).
With that, I am going to dawn my baggy shorts and stand alongside you during our journey…
“Somehow this post has gotten away from me….”
Dave, that happens a lot around here… sometimes people’s blogs even get hijacked in the comment section. You have to keep a close eye on some of these people….
great blog..many will be blessed
On the title:
I call myself winkingly “superhuman”…dpuble meaning:
1)very very human
2)a great human (as i let God use me)
Hey dude–I also got on here from Jeromy’s–and I’m glad I did!
Say, do you want to be included on the blog list in http://zoecarnate.com ? I am working on an update for that site now….
Whatever you do, KEEP BLOGGING!!
Yours sincerely,
