….and that’s just the way it is. If he stops looking in the mirror and keeps his head to the grind he could end up being one of the greatest musicians/songwriters/performers of our time. I love the diverstiy of his stuff from pop to blues to acoustic ballads to jazz to funk.
His songs have a depth to them that demand attention. This is one of my favorites:
Is there anyone who
Ever remembers changing there mind from
The paint on a sign?
Is there anyone who really recalls
Ever breaking rank at all
For something someone yelled real loud one timeEveryone believes
In how they think it ought to be
Everyone believes
And they’re not going easilyBelief is a beautiful armor
But makes for the heaviest sword
Like punching under water
You never can hit who you’re trying forSome need the exhibition
And some have to know they tried
It’s the chemical weapon
For the war that’s raging on insideEveryone believes
From emptiness to everything
Everyone believes
And no ones going quietlyWe’re never gonna win the world
We’re never gonna stop the war
We’re never gonna beat this
If belief is what we’re fighting forWhat puts a hundred thousand children in the sand
Belief can
Belief can
What puts the folded flag inside his mother’s hand
Belief can
Belief can
As a follower of Jesus I have to admit to the importance of love over belief. Jonathan asks the question this way. I ask, how many wars have been fought over love? It’s silly to even ask that, I suppose, but it makes a point. In the end, the people we defeat don’t really believe what we’re making them believe anyway. “I love you and here is what I believe…” says so much more than “Believe this because it’s right.”
It’s Good News, not our exclusive news. It’s news that I don’t deserve or own.
Way to go, John.
